Postbox Fairy

I was chatting with my mother-in-law yesterday afternoon (which was really nice, incidentally - it was good to have some time with just the two of us), and she said something like "Optimism isn't about assuming that everything will always go right for you; it's about having faith that you'll be able to handle things, whatever happens".

This isn't a perspective I'd come across before, and I'm not sure what to make of it, so I thought I'd throw it out there and see if any of you had any thoughts. Agree? Disagree?
